Kent Nagano will conduct Pierrot Lunaire for the first time in Montreal, interpreted by the remarkable soloists of the Bayerisches Staatsorchester, in collaboration with the State of Bavaria Quebec Office. This will be an exceptional opportunity to rediscover this groundbraking masterpiece, of which 2012 marks the 100th anniversary. The concerts will take place in a unique atmosphere, as the listeners will be seated in the choir of the brand new Maison symphonique in Montreal.
Making a clean break with the post-romanticism of Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler and Richard Wagner through a harmonic language that is linked to atonality and that is a harbinger of the composer’s twelve-tone works, this composition by Arnold Schoenberg would change music in the 20th century radically and irrevocably. Conceived as a setting for 21 poems by the Belgian poet Albert Giraud, whose atmosphere is alternately magical, decadent and provocative, Pierrot lunaire makes use of a singular instrumentation: a singer producing Sprechgesang (intermediate between speech and singing), piano, flute and piccolo, clarinet and bass clarinet, violin and viola, and cello. The instrumentalists are at once soloists and orchestra. Pierrot, the main character of a stage work that is a concert piece with cabaret overtones, is sometimes the hero and sometimes the fool.
The Bayerisches Staatsorchester (Bavarian State Opera Orchestra) was founded in 1523. Maestro Kent Nagano has been its music director since 2006, and for the first time he leads here some of the musicians he works with in Munich.
The concert on Monday, May 7th, is alread sold-out, nevertheless the MSO is proud to present an extra performance on Saturday, May 5th, at 2 :00 pm, at Montreal’s Maison symphonique. Tickets for this concert are for sale at (514) 842-9951 or on the MSO website. Don’t hesitate and make your reservation now!
